VegasTech and Startup Weekend

by David on 18/11/2011

Over the course of the next 2-3 weeks we will introduce to you several aspects of the technology startup community in Las Vegas, Nevada, where our firm is based. This is our first blog post on the subject.

The Las Vegas startup community, or “VegasTech” as it is known by local participants, has seen inspirational and impressive growth over the last twelve months. The growth has been both organic as well as from new firms that have relocated to Southern Nevada, such as Walls 360, whose founder created the infamous “fail whale” ubiquitous to all Twitter users.

Another key driver of the growth in the VegasTech community has been the rousing success of community-building events, such as Startup Weekend Las Vegas (SWLV) and LaunchUp, among others. Last night our firm attended the second event of LaunchUp Las Vegas (the first held in mid-September 2011); the turnout was near capacity on the campus at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

Today begins the second edition of SWLV durng the weekend; Explorateur Ventures is pleased to participate again as Mentors as we did in the first SWLV in June, and also at a SW event in Palo Alto, California in August. Our firm was mentioned in a Las Vegas Review-Journal article, which discusses both SWLV and a preparatory “boot camp” that was held last weekend to assist participants in maximizing their weekend involvement.

Related to the growth in the VegasTech community is the resurgence in Downtown Las Vegas. A good article on those activities can be found here.

For those interested in local Las Vegas events, projects and participants, we encourage you to visit and follow the site www.vegastech.com.

Stay tuned for more and have a great weekend.
